Susan’s Staff Pick – “The Buried Giant”

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro

This will be among my favorite books for the foreseeable future. It is set in the time after the Romans have left Britain, King Arthur’s exploits are fading memories, and the countryside is covered in fog and mist which distort all memories.

An elderly couple, Beatrice and Axl, set off on a journey to visit their son. Along the way, they meet a variety of unusual characters and explore the past through the memories they gradually recall and reveal to us.

This reads like a courteous, gentle, and charming fairy tale or fable. I absolutely loved it.
